Use the EQ

Use the 6-band EQ to shape the tone of your master: which frequencies each band covers, how far it moves, and keyboard shortcuts for fine moves.

Updated

The EQ is in the Track panel on the right of the workspace. It has 6 bands at 50 Hz, 90 Hz, 350 Hz, 2.5 kHz, 7 kHz and 10 kHz. Each band can be raised or lowered by up to 9 dB.

The EQ is off until you use it. Moving any fader turns it on, and the switch next to it turns it off again without losing your settings, which is a quick way to check whether your changes help.

What the bands are for

  • 50 Hz and 90 Hz: sub bass and the weight of the kick and bass.
  • 350 Hz: body and boxiness. A small cut here often cleans up a muddy mix.
  • 2.5 kHz: presence. Vocals and guitars come forward when you raise it, and turn harsh if you raise it too far.
  • 7 kHz and 10 kHz: brightness, sibilance and air.

Small moves go a long way on a full mix. Start with 1 or 2 dB.

Moving the faders

  • Drag a fader up or down.
  • With a fader selected, use the arrow keys to move it in 0.5 dB steps, and Page Up or Page Down to move it 3 dB.
  • Home and End jump to the top and bottom of the range.
  • Double-click a fader, or press 0, to set that band back to zero.
  • The reset button next to the switch sets every band back to zero.

EQ changes are rendered with the next Save changes, together with any control changes you have lined up.
